The main attraction of diving The Farne Islands (Northumberland) are the inquisitive seals, which often nibble diver’s fins and generally take a look at the slow moving interlopers they find on their patch.
When a diver comes to the surface quicker than advised, he is at risk of decompression illness (‘the bends’ is a serious version of this). In these cases it is important that they receive medical attention as quickly as possible. And, in the ocean, that means being lifted by helicopter – very spectacular.
